Understanding Prophecy and Deliverance by Pastor O. I. Ogedegbe

On Prophecy

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light (Genesis 1:3).

To prophesy is to declare God’s mind concerning our lives and situations. A prophet is a man called by God to declare His mind concerning the lives and situations of people around him.

Through prophecy God declared His own mind. He wanted light to shine and He declared it. He wanted land to appear and He declared it. He wanted animals and fishes to move on the land and in the water and He declared it. It is what you declare that will come into manifestation. What do you declare in your life today?

The moment God commanded that there should be light, darkness disappeared. I do not know the thing that represents darkness in your life right now. If only you can take charge and declare against it, it has no option but to obey the most powerful name of Jesus.

(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were (Romans 4:17).

Here the word “calleth” simply means to declare. It is when you declare God’s Word in faith that every circumstance or challenge bows to you. Your declaration can bring about a manifestation of what you want God to do for you. It can remove every obstacle from your way.

To prophesy is also to have a divine awareness of the things that had happened to people in the past, of the things that are now happening to people and of the things that will happen to people in the future. A prophet is a man called by God to have a divine awareness of people’s past, present and future.

Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet (John 4:16-19).

The woman of Samaria saw that Jesus is a prophet, because it takes a prophet to reveal the secret of the heart. It is only a prophet that can discover and reveal God’s purpose and plan for our lives. When you have the Holy Spirit in you, He gives you a divine awareness of each person’s circumstance or challenge. You can accurately tell people about their past, present and future.

From on the 5th to 7th of November, 2013, I was ministering in Pastor Gbenga Balogun’s Covenant Partners Church at Kaduna, Nigeria and on the first day of the programme, I said that prophetically I was hearing a name in the congregation: “Iya.” A woman came out and said that her name is Iyabo. Then I prophesied to her and prayed for her. The next day I said that I was hearing another name in the congregation: “Kokodia.” A man came out and corrected me that the name I mentioned is Okodia, not Kokodia. He said Okodia was one of the sponsors of the programme, but he could not attend it personally because he was busy in Abuja.

On the 26th of January, 2014, I went to Warri Central Hospital to pray for the sick. One of the wards I entered on that particular Sunday afternoon belonged to tuberculosis patients. I walked to the bed of a man and told him that he used to drink and it was his drinking that gave him the bad cough. He confirmed what I said to be true and I told him never to return to drinking again when God heals him.

Just two days later, on the 28th of January, 2014, a man called me from Libya and told me that he had two women in mind to marry from Nigeria. He only mentioned to me the Ibo names of the two women. I told him to call back later that same day and he did. I said God told me that his right life partner answers Favour as her English name. He exclaimed, “Oh, that is Chinenye!” Favour is the English name of one of the two Ibo women, but he never mentioned it to me when we first spoke.

On Deliverance

OIOGEDEGBE: You are welcome to this interview, great man of God. I can see you are making a mark in the deliverance ministry and so this morning we will be discussing deliverance in ministry. What do you understand by the word deliverance?

OBIUNUKEFE: Deliverance is setting people free from satanic bondage by the saving power of Jesus Christ. We have two spirits controlling human lives and they are the Spirit of God and that of Satan. We also have two worlds and they are the spiritual world and the physical world, but I will deliberate on the spiritual world. In the spiritual world, we have four hierarchies of demons influencing human lives as it says in Ephesians 6:12.

OIOGEDEGBE: How do the demons influence human lives?

OBIUNUKEFE: Demons influence human lives by living inside people and causing problems in their lives like joblessness, barrenness, marital failure, business collapse, financial hardship, frustration and disappointment. No problem is an ordinary one. There are many powers behind the scenes. There is a particular demon assigned to every unpleasant situation that people find themselves in life.

OIOGEDEGBE: How do demons get people?

OBIUNUKEFE: It is by the sins that people commit. Their sins give the demons access to them to operate in them. There are those who were sold to idols through ancestral covenants and the demons behind those idols may continue to dwell in them unless they are delivered. The duty of the demons is to distract them from serving the living God and from having a knowledge of the truth.

OIOGEDEGBE: Why do people fall during deliverance?

OBIUNUKEFE: They fall during deliverance because the demons in them cannot withstand the power of God. When the greater power shows up the lesser power bows and when light comes darkness goes. There are stubborn demons that need violence for them to go out. When the demons want to challenge the power of God, they are exorcized by fire and by force. That is why you see people falling during deliverance. That is divine falling. It is, therefore, not surprising to me that they do not feel any pain or sustain any injury because of the fall.

OIOGEDEGBE: Apart from falling, why are there other manifestations like screaming, scattering of the hair, turning around and rolling on the floor?

OBIUNUKEFE: The reason is that the demons are reacting to the power of God. When they are reacting, you see strange physical manifestations such as these things you have mentioned. It tells you the kind of evil spirit that is living in them. For instance, if you see someone barking like a dog during deliverance, you do not need a prophet to tell you that the person has a dog spirit.

OIOGEDEGBE: Why do the demons come back after demon-possessed people have been delivered?

OBIUNUKEFE: It is because many of them return to their former ways after they have been set free. Like I said, their sins give the demons access to them. The evil spirits that left them during deliverance use their sins as an opportunity to come back and the last state of such people is worse than the first state as it says in Matthew 12:43-45.

OIOGEDEGBE: What must people do to be permanently free from demon possession?

OBIUNUKEFE: Thank you for that question. First of all, they must give their lives to Christ fully and go for deliverance. The demon-possessed people must be willing to be delivered before deliverance can happen. Otherwise, the deliverance minister is just wasting his time. It takes a longer time and more effort for deliverance to happen if the demon-possessed people are not willing to be delivered. Secondly, they must maintain a holy life after being delivered and be committed to the things of God so that the demons will not have access to them again.

OIOGEDEGBE: Is it every minister that should conduct deliverance?

OBIUNUKEFE: A minister who does not have the power of deliverance in him should not conduct deliverance at all. If he tries it without having the power, he may endanger himself especially if he is living in sin. If he cannot deliver them, he may become demonized himself. So when a minister who is not called into the deliverance ministry imitates others and conducts deliverance, he is only subjecting himself to a lot of spiritual attacks and inviting problems to his life.

OIOGEDEGBE: How do we know when people fall under the anointing or under the power of deliverance?

OBIUNUKEFE: People who fall under the anointing will manifest the gifts of the Holy Ghost like speaking in tongues, while others who fall under the power of deliverance will also manifest but with strange physical behaviours like you mentioned earlier.

OIOGEDEGBE: What is your advice to Christians and the general public?

OBIUNUKEFE: Deliverance is a spiritual necessity for everyone and so go for it. Thank you very much.

On Kefee

Who dreamed that sun sets at noon?
For these red lips, like a musical moon,
Shine early but fade soon,
Kefee passed away in life’s final sleep,
And Urhobo’s great daughter died.
